Always Answer the Phone

‘Dad! Is everything alright?’ That’s what I said when ‘Dad Cell’ flashed on my phone this afternoon. I half expected it to be someone else. A relative. A nurse. Someone telling me something happened. My stomach felt sick as I waited the few seconds for a voice to respond. ‘Katie. Did you catch the game yesterday?’ I gasped. See my dad hasn’t called me in a really long time. He used to call me weekly and then he had a stroke and it changed him. It changed the way he…

Because of Her, He’s a Better Man

My Dad isn’t who he used to be. When my daughter Evie came along, he changed. As if by magic, he started to notice things he hadn’t noticed before. He began to see the things he HAD noticed a little bit differently, too. He was the first person to form a special connection with Evie aside from her Dad and I. It was obvious to my parents when Evie was just a few months old that something was different about her. She wasn’t like other babies they had experienced. She…

Worth the Wait

There are really precious moments in life. Like when your father-in-law comes to find you to say… ‘Cooper and I just walked around the campground. He held my hand the whole entire way. He’s never done that before.’ He just beamed as he said it. Ten years is a long time to wait as a Grandpa. But worth every minute. I’ve never met a more loved or treasured little boy. Finding Cooper’s Voice is a safe, humorous, caring and honest place where you can celebrate the unique challenges of parenting…

Home From Grandma’s

Cooper adores going to his grandparent’s house. He can hardly wait to get there and typically gives me a quick wave when it’s time for me to go. He likes to stay two nights and no more. That’s his max time he will happily be away from home. At grandma’s he gets spoiled rotten and treated like a little prince. There is ice cream and swimming and snuggles and endless episodes of Family Feud. Today he came home. He always struggles transitioning too and from. He wants to be home.…

Happy Birthday Grandma

Immediately after Cooper got on the bus this morning I sent this email to his teacher. Good morning! Cooper wanted me to tell you it’s his grandmas birthday today and we are celebrating tomorrow after the train museum. He’s very excited. He also has crazy socks on!’ I sent it because he is so excited for his grandma’s birthday he can hardly stand it. Add in our trip to the train museum tomorrow and crazy sock day and today is the best day ever for him. He gasped and danced…

Choosing Gratitude

Yesterday I visited my dad at his nursing home. He had a stroke in April and while his mind and humor are spot on, his arm and leg don’t want to cooperate much anymore. So, he’s officially in the system as he says. This is my fifth time seeing him since his stroke and I didn’t cry as much this time. Instead we laughed a lot. We joked about a lot of things and it felt good to replace the sadness with humor. It felt natural for us. And then…

It Could have Been the Last Time

See that voicemail from my dad? I just saw that it was there. I didn’t know until a few minutes ago. I find as my kids get older, and use my phone to watch videos, I lose track of people trying to contact me. The messages and voicemails build up without me knowing and when I finally look I feel terrible. Except that wasn’t the case this time. My dad called me last Tuesday afternoon. I sent him to voicemail because I was busy at the time. I was on…

The Transition from Child to Caregiver

I spent the last few days in the hospital with my dad. He is 79. When we are young we think our parents are invincible. We never pause to think that they are getting older. Until they do. Growing up, my dad always seemed so tall. So big. So calm. His motto throughout life has always been, ‘be kind.’ I can remember him saying it to me from a very early age. I never truly understood it’s importance until I had kids of my own. He knew all along. As…

To My Adoptive Parents, I’m Thankful for Your Love

Dear Mom and Dad, It’s nearly February when families will take down the snowmen scenes and begin decorating their home with red and pink hearts to symbolize the month of love. This year as we enter into the month, I realize, no symbol expresses or explains the love you have shown and continue to show me. About a year and a half ago, you gave up your dream, the one you worked your entire adulthood for, to help in mine. My dream of being a mom. It hasn’t gone quite…

Love Comes in Many Forms

What is love, “a profoundly tender, passionate affection for another person.”  Love comes in many forms. As a child, we think of the soft, tender love that sits amongst family. As an adolescent, we think of our rich friendships that are filled with late-night talks. As adults, we think of our romantic relationships that form foundations of growth, beauty, and struggle.  The choice to love not found in common ties of biology is where I often land when thinking about love.  I found pieces of myself in each person who…
