What Autism Took From Me

It’s hard to write this — As I look at our wedding photo from 31 years ago, I almost don’t recognize the woman in the photo. I can’t help but think what autism took from me…from us. There were so many years I spent my nights sitting in front of my computer, trying to find a way to help our son. I lost count of how many hours I spent. I was going to help him even if it meant I lost you. I couldn’t do both and I hoped…

Must Love Autism

“Do you have any siblings?”  It’s a classic first date question, and rightfully so — it’s simple and seemingly painless to answer. It leads to an easy conversation. I can’t blame anyone for asking.  “Yep, I have a younger brother, Alex,” I’ll reply.  The follow-up question is almost always the same.  “How old is he?” “He’s 23. We’re almost exactly 18 months apart. He has autism,” I always add quickly.  As soon as I say it I wait for the reaction. A lot of the time people respond by listing…

The Questionnaires Still Sting

My son Jayden has settled into school and he is doing amazing. I am still pinching myself every day when I drop him off.  We are now starting to incorporate the other therapies Jayden needs back into his new schedule.  It is official. I have received my mountain of paperwork.  All I have to say is, WOW!  Jayden is eight and some of the questionnaires are still completely brutal to complete.  I really thought at this point the questions would be less cumbersome or I would be used to the…

He Stayed While I Loved Her More

The moment I laid my eyes on her, I knew she would alter my life in ways I had no ability to perceive just yet. It would have been impossible to know that her love would beckon me to pour myself into her all day, every day for years at the risk of losing my husband. I was already in love with her, and we had just met.  My husband, Greg, was the whole package. From the beginning, I knew he was out of my league, but that didn’t scare…

How We Show Love In Our House

Cooper has always communicated by touching faces. I like to believe it’s a nonverbal thing. And a Cooper thing. In my mind it’s a way to feel someone’s emotions when it’s hard to understand the words. Or facial expressions. It’s a way to say ‘I love you’ or ‘I am mad’ when the words can’t come out. It’s a way to get someone’s attention too. If Cooper really likes you, he will touch your face. This morning, and every single morning for the last six years, he has woke me…

Our Life is No Different Than Yours

Our life is no different than yours. Not really. I have three boys. One is 8. He doesn’t say much. But he’s always listening. He hears everything. One is six. He never stops talking. He seems to never be listening. Not ever. And the baby, well, he never stops moving. He really loves kids. And fly swatters. And crackers. Our house is loud. And so cluttered. Our toilets all need to be scrubbed. Every counter seems to be sticky. We can’t keep up with the dishes. We start the dryer…

A Life of Gratitude

It takes a lot of practice and work to live a life of gratitude. It’s sitting in your darkest hours and deciding to be grateful for the experience. My husband and I decided at the beginning of our marriage that we would live a life of gratitude. There have been some hard days where we simply talked about being grateful for breathing. There have been crazy days where we were grateful for silence. November is the month where we are the most grateful. We are grateful for the March of…

The Therapists Who Take Care of Us

I have always been the caregiver. When I was little, it was for my younger sister. When I met my husband, it was for him, and still is. When we got pregnant with mason, it just came naturally. I went to every doctors appointment, took my prenatal vitamins, tried to eat healthy. I continued to work out and took care of myself, for my buddy that was growing bigger by the day. When he was born, he was perfect. The first time I saw him he looked exactly how I…

I’m Thankful for the Way You Take Care of Us

Meet Ted. His name suggests exactly what you’d think it does. A simple guy. A good ole boy. A guy who can fix your brakes or loan you his trailer. A guy who chops wood and knows how to do drywall. A guy whose humor is subtle, but hysterical if you catch it. A guy who loves any meal you cook for him. A guy who loves to hunt, but rarely gets to go. A guy with a strong handshake and even stronger integrity. A quiet guy, but great conversationalist.…

I’m Thankful For Our Therapists

We’ve been doing therapy since my son Nicholas was 6 months old. He was behind from the very beginning, and wasn’t hitting his milestones at all. He was oversensitive to everything, would arch his back a lot, and needed help with most things. It was recommended by his pediatrician that he start seeing an occupational therapist (OT). Those were some hard therapy days. Nicholas was uncomfortable and cried a lot. We worked on tummy time, sitting, feeding, and fine motor skills with little success. Because of his sensitivity his OT…
