The Story of Us

cooper 22

There is no better photo to share 2 days before Forever Boy is available for everyone.

Because it’s a story of a boy. Of a family. Of me. And it’s about autism.

But it’s so much more. It’s a story of hope. Hard work. Resilience. Dedication. Love.

The story starts before Cooper was diagnosed. The beginning of us. Our marriage. Miscarriage. And then our blonde haired boy.

And the confusing years. Then the hard years. Years where we couldn’t leave our house. And we didn’t sleep. And we felt alone and forgotten.

The years that made us who we are.

And today. Me. I. Brought three of my kids, Cooper, Harbie, and my baby to the rink for baseball practice for my 9 year old. See, Dad was coaching so I had to do it alone.

And for a lot of years, it wasn’t possible.

But today, we did it.

Cooper dressed himself. He put his own shoes on. He buckled his seatbelt. He danced to Let It Go on the car radio.

He walked in safely. He sat. He wandered. He was safe. He didn’t get upset when the vending machine wouldn’t take our dollar. He drank from the drinking fountain. He threw his garbage away.

And we were there. All of us.

Eleven years.

See the book is in the story of how we got here. It’s not a guidebook or even a manual. It’s not instructions either.

It’s stories of the the ups and downs and hard work.

To get right here.

Our whole family made it.

He only went on the field once.

Sawyer: ‘Hi Cooper. Did you want to play with us? I can show you how!’

It’s the story of spreading autism awareness.

It’s the story of our life.
