Never Judge a Boy in Pajamas

My son went out in his pajamas today. It was 3pm in the afternoon.

It wasn’t because I’m a bad mum.

It wasn’t because I am a lazy git.

It wasn’t because I don’t care.

In fact it was the total opposite.

My son refused to leave the house. I held out four pairs of shorts and a selection of t-shirts – each one was rejected!

It was not because he is a bad kid, and it is not because I don’t know how to discipline my son.

It is because of sensory processing disorder and that his brain couldn’t tolerate uncomfortable clothes today.

It is because he is autistic and going out after being in all morning was just too much for him to process. It is because he has ADHD, and was hyper focused on his paw patrol episode.

Going out in his comfy wear meant it was actually possible to step over the threshold. It meant we could get out and break a potential cycle of cabin fever.

But you wouldn’t know all that if you saw us out. Some people judge and assume I am a bad parent, but actually I am the best parent I can be.

Before you judge, remember that you don’t know the whole story.

Everyone starts at a different baseline. Our starting point today was a low one, but we stepped it up as soon as we got out – even if it was in pajamas.

Do it your way and remember others will do it theirs!
