Autism Times Two

On September 1, 2022, our youngest daughter Lucy was diagnosed on the autism spectrum.

Almost exactly two years after her big sister, Opal. It may come as a shock to some, but I have tried to talk openly about how we had concerns that Lucy may be autistic too.
Lucy and Opal are complete opposites, and I know to some people that would seem to mean that Lucy couldn’t possibly be autistic, but this couldn’t be further from the truth.

Autism is different for everyone. You will never meet two EXACT individuals on the spectrum. That’s why it is called a spectrum.

It’s not a line from “less autistic” to “more autistic.” It’s a circle and all autistic individuals fall in different spots in that circle.

This diagnosis does not change how much we love Lucy, and it absolutely does not change our hopes and dreams for her future. We believe God has a big calling on her life, just like her big sister. We believe that God is faithful and has been faithful throughout this entire process.
It was pouring on our way to get results today, and a dear friend reminded me that rainbows always come after rain.
Is it easy to receive news that both of your children have disabilities?
Absolutely not.
But this time around, we are educated, we know so much more, and we don’t see autism as a death sentence. It’s not a dirty word. We are able to celebrate her because autism does not define her future.
We have TWO girls on the spectrum. While that means they have disabilities, we celebrate them exactly who God has made them to be. Fearfully and wonderfully made!

My husband, Ethan and I are so blessed to be Opal and Lucy’s parents.

We feel inadequate most days and have no clue what we’re doing, but WE are the blessed ones to learn and teach and grow right alongside them. And we wouldn’t change that even for a second!
Lucy Joy, Happy Autism Diagnosis Day!

What beautiful little girls. I am not autistic but I do have Dyscalculia. DCD and dysgraphia. I am married and have son also granddaughter. Those diagnoses made my life little harder but it still has been happy one. 🙏

I love how you are so faithful that God make them exactly as He did and that it is for HIS purpose. May He continue to work in your lives and that you give Him the glory for what the children are able to do.
May God’s peace continue to surround your family…❤️❤️
