A Family of Three

Kate 48

We are spending the day as a family of three.

Enjoying our children individually, and speaking to their hearts, is something Cooper’s dad and I try to do when we can.

With four kids it can be a challenge. But today, it worked perfect.

We took Cooper for a boat ride on the Mississippi River. His most favorite place ever.

He loves the wind and when the water splashes him and the trains that go by every 20 minutes like clockwork.

He is calm here. At peace. He gasps a lot. And has perfected the Minnesota nice trait of waving to everyone who boats by.

He adores waving. And when folks wave back.

This morning, on our way to the Marina, he watched an episode of Barney sailing. He scrolled through pictures from previous summer of our family on the boat.

And he reminded me to buckle my seatbelt. Twice actually.

When I say he amazes me I don’t say it lightly. Progress over perfection. I see it every day. And my goodness there is beauty in progress.

Because it just takes one look inward to remember the really challenging years. And to see his progress. It blows my mind.

‘It’s a sailing life for me.’ That’s what he danced to on the dock before he grabbed my hand to walk safely onto the boat.

I’m not sure anymore who is leading who.

Finding Cooper’s Voice is a safe, humorous, caring and honest place where you can celebrate the unique challenges of parenting a special needs child. Because you’re never alone in the struggles you face. And once you find your people, your allies, your village….all the challenges and struggles will seem just a little bit easier.
