He Needs More Time

boys

People always ask me how much my son Coops understands. I think they ask because he’s nonverbal and often it may appear to the untrained eye that he isn’t paying attention or comprehending.

My answer is a lot. He understands so much. He is always listening. And when I don’t know the answer…I presume competence and encourage others around us to do the same.

There is one thing though that I know he doesn’t understand. He doesn’t understand that his younger brother is growing up and will soon want his own space.

Right now they sleep together every single night. They each have their own room but every night, Sawyer climbs in bed with his big brother.

I know it won’t last forever. And I know Cooper doesn’t understand that Sawyer has a life outside this house. I know because when Sawyer is at hockey or at a play date, Cooper asks for him repeatedly.

Sawyer told me a while back…’mama, I can’t sleep with him forever. Can you help me tell him? I don’t know how.’

With tears in my eyes I told him to give his older brother time. He needs a little more time with you Sawyer.

Finding Cooper’s Voice is a safe, humorous, caring and honest place where you can celebrate the unique challenges of parenting a special needs child.
