We Waited Ten Years For This

Beautiful things are happening between these two brothers. Things that we weren’t sure would happen. Things we accepted may never happen. Because we just didn’t know.

They have never played a game together, at least not in the traditional sense. Sawyer tried for years to engage his older brother but never had any luck. It was heartbreaking for him. But lately, Cooper is loving to wrestle, tickle, run, and chase his brothers. It came out of nowhere. It’s a gift.

He laughs so deep from his belly and his face turns red and you just know you are witnessing pure joy. He never initiates though. He waits for us to play, usually in the evening before bed.

For years he would just watch and then inch by inch, year after year, he eventually joined in.

Well tonight, before dinner, he used his words to say, ‘SS-AW-ER.’ He looked around for him and then came to me to ask again for his brother.

I wasn’t sure what he was wanting with Sawyer, since he so rarely asks for him, so I told him to get his speech device. I watched him navigate the screen and press one button a dozen times.

Play. Play. Play. Play.

With tears in my eyes I told him to look one more time for his younger brother and this time, check mommy’s office.

For the next twenty minutes they wrestled and ran and rolled and I thought my walls were going to fall down. Two rambunctious boys with a little toddler trailing behind.

Take that developmental milestones. Age 10. Initiates play for the first time. Nailed it.

Being apart of Cooper’s life feels like magic sometimes. Continuous gifts that seem to come out of nowhere. Nothing is small to us either. It’s all huge. Things so many take for granted…not us.

That’s a blessing if you ask me.
