6 Ways to Make Homework Time Less Stressful

Kate Swenson of Finding Cooper's Voice

Whether you have a 3rd grader practicing spelling words or a teenager practicing geometry, homework can be a very stressful time. I know it is in our home.

Here are 5 ways to establish a homework routine and ease the stress.

List

Choose a specific time for your child to do their homework. Maybe it's right after school. Or maybe closer to bedtime. Just make it consistent and prioritize that time every single day. And stick to the schedule.

01.

set a time

Have open communication with your child's teachers so you know exactly what needs to be done every day for school. If your child is unable to remember what's do, ask the teacher for written communication.

02.

communicate

Kids sit all day long. Get outside when you can. Whether that's getting the wiggles out first, taking breaks, or even incorporating nature in the homework. Try and get outside!

03.

Kid's do best when they know exactly what they need to do. 20 minutes of reading, 10 minutes of writing, and so on. Have a list of what needs to be done and stick to it.

04.

Reach out for help

05.

If nothing else works and your child can't seem to do their homework even with your help, it may be worth contacting their teacher.

Find a quiet space away from the chaos of home. In our house, with six people, that can be challenging. But it's worth it.

06.

You can also look into hiring a tutor for your child. Often, college or high school aged kids are looking for a part time job and would do a great job! Or a teacher or even professional company.
